SINGAPORE, Feb. 15 - At least 30 bloggers, journalists, filmmakers, TV personalities and others have been jailed since August after having their websites blocked by the Ministry of Communications, Information and Broadcasting (MOCIB).

These include:

Shakira (38). In a case that drew heavy international press attention, journalist and producer Shekhar Gupta was sentenced to seven years in jail for violating the Communications Act, 2012 and the Foreign Correspondents' Privileges Act.

Award-winning filmmaker and writer Pim Aoki (31). In a case that shocked media industry watchers, award-winning writer and director Pim Aoki was sentenced to 12 months in jail for not following regulations for broadcasting during political periods and failing to abide by regulations for a news agency he had created to promote his films.

The court found that Mr Aoki had violated several laws and had shown no good faith by failing to comply with regulations for a news agency he created. The court also found that Mr Aoki had shown a "contempt for the basic principles" of fair use.

Ms Kees Ayer (35). In a case that drew international press attention, Singaporean writer Ms Kees Ayer received five years of jail for disseminating an article. A conviction was expected, but the judge said the penalty was disproportionate because it breached laws and had a "contempt for the basic principles of fair use".

"I am outraged to learn that an author, an activist, and a journalist have been sentenced for engaging in peaceful expression of opinion. I believe the law must respect the rights of citizens and to promote the rights of expression and communication in society," said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the time.

In another case, a television personality was sentenced to three years in prison, for "deliberately distributing false news" and "propagating false news".

Nia Naleng, executive director of Free Press Association, said: "It is a sad day when bloggers are being convicted under the law of defamation. I encourage any Singaporean bloggers to tell the government that they are willing to speak out and support their rights to freedom of expression. This is why we continue to work to bring about a change in the law to protect free speech."

The court has issued three warnings to the website owners and has directed them to remove the offending material within 24 hours and to remove any other offending material within 72 hours after the warning.
